ThermTec Wild 650D thermal monocular: dual 25/50 mm F0.9 objective lens, 640×512 sensor with NETD <18 mK, 1.4x to 2.8x magnification and 1024×768 AMOLED display. Detection up to 2600 m and up to 8 hours per battery, with two in the box.

The ThermTec Wild 650D thermal monocular (reference WILD650D) has a dual 25/50 mm F0.9 objective lens: at 25 mm it shows a wide field for scanning, and one lever switches to 50 mm for long-range observation, with detection up to 2600 m. The 640×512 pixel sensor has NETD below 18 mK and the image is shown on a 1024×768 AMOLED display. Each 18650 battery lasts up to 8 hours, two come in the box, and the device records photo and video on 64 GB.

Features

  • 640×512 sensor at 12 µm with NETD <18 mK: 8–14 µm microbolometer at 50 Hz. Low NETD separates the animal from the background better on damp, foggy or low-contrast nights.
  • Dual 25/50 mm F0.9 objective lens: 25 mm for 17.5° × 14° (30.7 × 24.6 m at 100 m) and 50 mm for 8.8° × 7.0° (15.4 × 12.3 m at 100 m). Detection reaches 1300 m at 25 mm and 2600 m at 50 mm, according to the manufacturer.
  • 1.4x or 2.8x magnification with 1x to 4x digital zoom: optical magnification doubles when switching lens and the continuous digital zoom takes it up to 11.2x. The PIP window shows the centre of the image at 2x.
  • 0.39-inch AMOLED display at 1024×768: 40 mm eye relief, 6 mm exit pupil and ±5 dioptre adjustment. Six palettes (white hot, black hot, red hot, green, golden and violet), forest and target image modes and a target outline mode.
  • AI distance measurement and stabilisation: pushing the joystick left, the device estimates the distance to the animal with artificial intelligence (it is not a laser rangefinder). Electronic image stabilisation (EIS) reduces hand shake when observing far away.
  • Battery life and start-up: one replaceable 18650 battery lasts up to 8 hours and two come in the box. It starts in about 3 seconds and, according to the manufacturer, keeps a stable image for up to an hour without recalibration.
  • Recording and app: photo and video with OSD on 64 GB, hot tracking and burn protection. Through the hotspot, the ThermTec Outdoor app shows the live image, sends real-time notifications and updates the firmware. The USB-C port charges, transfers files and outputs video.
  • Build: magnesium alloy body with rubber coating, silent lens cover, IP67 protection and operation from −20 °C to +50 °C. One-handed use with an adjustable-sensitivity joystick and focus wheel.

Why choose this model?

The Wild 650D is the top model of the Wild-D series: with the same 25/50 mm lenses, its 640×512 sensor gives a field of view almost twice as wide as the Wild 350D (17.5° × 14° against 10.5° × 7.9° at 25 mm) and more detail when using the digital zoom.

It suits scanning at short and medium range and switching to 50 mm to observe up to 2600 m. Battery life is up to 8 hours per battery, and two come in the box.

How to choose

The Wild-D series has two models with the same body, 25/50 mm F0.9 lenses, 1024×768 AMOLED display, 64 GB and 647.5 g. The Wild 350D (384×288, 2.4x to 4.8x, up to 10 hours) has higher base magnification and longer battery life; the Wild 650D (640×512, 1.4x to 2.8x, up to 8 hours) has a wider field of view and more detail when zooming. If you need laser-measured distance, the Wild Pro series offers the Wild 650DL Pro, also with a dual 25/50 mm lens, a 640×512 sensor with NETD <15 mK, a 1600×1200 display and a rangefinder up to 1000 m. Rule of thumb: more pixels give more detail and field; a longer lens gives more range but less field.

Frequently asked questions

At what distance does the Wild 650D detect an animal?
The manufacturer states 1300 m with the 25 mm lens and 2600 m with the 50 mm lens. Detection means seeing that there is a heat source; recognising and identifying the animal requires much shorter distances.

Does the Wild 650D have a rangefinder?
It has no laser rangefinder. It has AI distance measurement, which estimates the distance to the animal from the image. For laser ranging, ThermTec offers the Wild 650DL Pro.

How long does the Wild 650D battery last?
Up to 8 hours per 18650 battery, according to the manufacturer. Two batteries and a charger come in the box, and the device also charges through the USB-C port.

How do you switch between 25 mm and 50 mm?
With the field-switch lever on the body. The manual says to always push the lever to the end of its travel and to focus the larger lens first.

Does the Wild 650D record and connect to a phone?
Yes. It records photo and video on 64 GB of internal memory and, through the device hotspot, connects to the ThermTec Outdoor app, which shows the live image, controls the monocular and updates the firmware.
