The wooden nock for traditional arrows replaces the self-nock, that is, the groove cut directly into the shaft. It is glued to the end of the arrow and creates a fit on the string that is more resistant than the wood of the shaft, which tends to splinter with use.

Supplied by the dozen, it keeps the look of a wooden arrow, unlike a coloured plastic nock.
